You Made the Claim So You Prove It! — The Burden of Proof
Is it Incumbent on You to Support Your Claim?
When engaging in debates or discussions, it’s not uncommon to come across the statement:
“You made the claim, the burden of proof is on you!”
This seemingly logical stance suggests that whoever presents a claim should provide evidence to support it. However, this notion can often miss the mark when it comes to furthering discussion and critical thinking.
But then this can also be the hidden intention.
Some will seek to kill your argument and stop it dead, there and then.
The notion that making a claim automatically requires the claimant to provide proof may seem straightforward, but it overlooks a crucial point: the importance of independent verification.
In a time where misinformation and false claims can easily propagate, it’s essential for each individual to critically evaluate information and sources for themselves. I cannot emphasise this point enough.
The Weak Challenger
Those who use the phrase, “You made the claim, the burden of proof is on you,” hold the underlying belief that this automatically invalidates the argument you’ve presented.
