Prejudice is still the tough old stain on the shirt. Even as things get better in every way, the hard truth is that, collectively, the world has two attitudes concerning the rights and freedoms of individuals. There are those who support your right to be who you are and do what you want to do. And there are those who don’t.
As the chronic and discreet cousin of hate, prejudice is the flipside of inclusiveness and empathy. When prejudices are based on skin-colour, gender, religion, sexual orientation, global origin or any other feature of an individual’s identity, the feeling of disrespect that they experience interferes with their fundamental right to be and become, who they are and whom they wish to be.
At the centre of this difference is the left’s emphasis on empathy and tolerance. Independent-mindedness of the sort that Good people value proceeds from the fundamental dignity and value that every person holds.
Ideally we aim for all societies to be enriched by people being given the freedom to explore their own unique talents and abilities.
And, moreover, those who spread prejudice do so from a position of fear, ignorance or concealed…
