Debate is the search for the Truth. While debate can be competitive its main purpose isn’t to result in you being right. Fair debate, at least, allows both sides the opportunity to present their case and challenge ideas, facts and opinions to evolve our knowledge today.
But what happens when the debate isn’t fair?
What happens when there is no debate at all?!
We see this online every day
- Someone doesn’t like what you say so you’re blocked.
- Ridicule takes precedent over presenting of facts
- Arguments detract from the original point (as a tactic to catch you out) so they can declare overall victory.
- Trolls pounce en mass and say you’re wrong so therefore you must be.
- Labels such as “Conspiracy Theorist” and “Far Right” are used as if they are the evidence that proves a point wrong.
When large Organisations and Governments intervene we find far stronger actions
- Censorship / Shadowbanning
- Suspension / Demonitization
- Or worse, fines and / or Prison
And at the end of the day these will all come with the branding…
