Scotland is facing one of the most oppressive laws in the Western World today. The SNP Government in Scotland wants to make sure everyone is protected from hate, but people are worried this has stopped them from sharing opinions freely, and instead, weaponised speech.
A law called the Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Bill is at the centre of issue. People are rightly concerned because you don’t require evidence to accuse someone of a hate crime.
You simply contact the police and say you “felt” hate because of someones words. This could lead to charges for anyone who just wants to share their opinions no matter how passive their words may be.
It doesn’t even matter if what you said was in the privacy of your own home. All speech said anywhere, in private, online, even as a joke by professional comedians, can be reported as a hate crime.
